I do agree with Conner when he says, “Special revelation refers to those acts of God whereby He reveals Himself and His will to specific persons.” Kevin J. Conner The Foundations of Christian Doctrine.
God reveals himself through his miracles as written about in the book of Exodus when He brought through Moses the plagues in Egypt to deliver his people from slavery and oppression. The very first miracle in Exodus 4:1-5 when the Lord told Moses to cast down his rod and it became a serpent. What is interesting is Moses reaction to the rod turning into a serpent – he fled from it! Then the Lord told him to take it by the tail and when he did it became a rod again. This act of faith in Moses and first miracle is more than a revelation is an act of deliverance of people!
Can you image if God spoke to you and told you to pick up a deadly poison sneak how you would react? The trust that Moses had in God to reach down and pick up that snake is amazing! God was in no uncertain terms reveling himself to Moses, he was God’s chosen to deliver his people from the hands of slavery to the promise land. The miracles continued and even became more astonishing than one could possibly imagine.
Manna from heaven, fire by night, and a cloud by day did God lead his people, miracle after miracle, then the opening of the Red Sea to make passage to the promise land. Exodus 16-17. Even with all these miracles they were baptized with Moses in the cloud and in the sea and drank from the spiritual rock the water, which was a preview of Christ and his coming church, the people displeased God, how sad. 1 Cor. 10:1-6 Now these things were our examples, to the intent we should not lust after evil things, as they also lusted.
It is so hard for me to stay on script as I write this I feel his presence and heart with his displeasure with his people, then he takes me to his trial before Pontus Pilot, and I see Him, being cursed by the Priest, Pharisees and in the scripture in Isiah 53: 1-5 where his people reject him and despise him accusing him of blaspheme claiming he is the Son of God. So why would God reveal himself to people that reject him and displeasure him? The connection here is the rock and water being Christ who founded his church on the rock being the Son of God, the truth and greatest revelation to mankind, the resurrection of Christ!!! These people were chosen to bring forth the Christ, the son of the living God for salvation to his kingdom. These miracles served the purpose for all generations to know that he is God, and he will deliver his chosen people who will deliver our Christ who will deliver us as his church.
Back to script…God reveals himself through Prophecy, Connor teaches two types of prophecy, preaching and prediction, but there is a third type of prophecy that comes through the word of knowledge that is personal. In my own ministry I often hear from God when praying over people, telling me what is wrong with them, or about their ministry, and gives me prophetic messages for them. I can write tons of scripture on God’s prophecy, but what is important is Joel 2:28 When he says he will pour out his spirit on all flesh and my sons and daughters will prophesy and old men dream dreams and young men see visions.
God’s miracle of revealing himself through prophecy is for everyone, not a select few! Conner says it best when he says, “Just as miracles are a revelation of God’s power so the fulfillment of prophecy is a revelation of God’s infinite knowledge.” Praise God and his glory that through the Holy Spirit we have access to HIM, made possible by Christ our savior.
Revelation of Christ, all the miracles in the world and prophecies could never match the relationship we have in Christ! To know is mind, and heart, his personality, and love is nothing short of the greatest of miracles, Christ in us the hope of glory. Col. 1:27. The same God that created the universe, the heavens, lives in us. John 1:1 In the beginning was the Word, and Word was with God, and Word was made flesh and dwelt among us.
John 1:18 No man hath seen God at any time; the only begotten Son, which is the in the bosom of the Father, he has declared him. Colossians 1:15 Who is the image of the invisible God.
In conclusion, the greatest revelation of God, is when we as his people spend time in His presence praying and seeking his face. Reading his word, speaking with him, and having communion with him. Some preachers call it the Glory Room, others the Sanctuary, John called it the Throne Room, but for me, it’s Jesus, it is the most beautiful, and cherished time every morning to spend with him, reading, praying, and praising Him. Every morning, I ask him to fill me up and take me up to be in his presence where I hear his voice, feel his love, receive his miracles. The healing power in the deep presence of God is remarkable. Three times I have been healed physically and received His miracles! We serve a miracle working God, and to Him be the Glory! Palms 100:4, Isaiah 40:31 Rest in his presence, and be still for He is the Lord! In this rest not only will you hear his voice, but receive His Miracles!
